Sarah Manski’s “Stationary Nation” ReDesign

Stationary Nation OriginalReDesigned PagePDF

The first page is the original website of Stationary Nation and the second picture is my redesign. The client is Stationary Nation. They provide free, printable stationary for email, note cards, invitations, and other everyday occasions.

Their target audience are individuals who care about ascetics and design. These people are: graphic designers creating business stationary, party planners designing invitations, homemakers making cards for their daughter’s birthday party, or couples looking at fonts for wedding stationary.

The client and I decided that the website needed an updated, professional look. To achieve this end, I used black and white photography and text with an improved font. The client approved this approach.

There are several problems being solved with the new web redesign. All the relevant information the user needs is now right in front and there is no longer the need to scroll down. Also, it is now immediately clear what is the purpose of this website. Before the redesign, the user needed to read the text to understand that this site’s purpose is to allow the user to create personalized stationary.

This client had a very limited budget, so they wanted a simple website that would be easy to manage. There was a two week deadline with payment made at the completion of the website. Approval was received from the executive director of Stationary Nation, who was responsible for the final editing and proofreading of the text before launch. The executive director was additionally responsible for providing the web designer with text, art, photography, etc. Stationary Nation owns the copyrights to all of the design materials provided.

Client/Project Brief Document

Here is a client/project brief I would like you to fill out for your redesign project and submit with your final copy on Tuesday. The client brief is a critical component to any project as it is used to spell out what you learn in the Discovery phase of a web communication project. You can either print this out and write in your answers or copy and paste the document into a program such as MS Word and fill it out electronically.

Websites from Tuesday’s lecture

Below is a listing of the sites I shared in class on Tuesday, with some additions. One of the best is the Web Design from Scratch site. It’s an excellent resource for aspiring web communicators. It’s definitely a resource to use again and again.

Remember the one of the key points from our discussion on Tuesday was to understand how web design style and convention has evolve to this point (e.g. the Web 2.0 style). And notice too how how these sites use CRAP and content to make key information/key messages prominent.

Quiz … Due on Tuesday

Following is the take home quiz which is due next Tuesday February 12th at the start of class. As I mentioned before, I will not be in class tomorrow so it will be an open lab for those of you who wish to work on this and/or your second assignment. Good luck!

  1. What is HTML? What is the original purpose of HTML? How does knowing its original purpose affect us as web communicators?
  2. Creating a website is a process. In class, I discussed the “4Ds” process for creating effective sites. Name each of the “D’s” and please describe the purpose of each step. What questions do you need to ask during each D? What are the goals of each step?
  3. Usability expert Steven Krug’s has 3 “facts of life” regarding how humans interact information on the web. What are the 3 facts? Considering these “facts of life”, why is his concept of billboard design useful?
  4. What is CRAP? Explain each principle and how it relates to web design. Please find an example/s from a live website/s that effectively illustrates these principles in action.
  5. What are 2 standard image file formats for the web? When should you use each?
  6. Name at least 4 roles (e.g. positions) of a typical web design team.
  7. Don Norman, PhD. (http://www.jnd.org/) and Jakob Nielsen, PhD. (http://www.useit.com/) are considered two of the top usability experts. What are they main differences in their philosophies about design and design aesthetics?
  8. You have been hired to create an interface redesign for http://www.tallyhouniforms.com/. Please redesign the interface for this client and submit it as either a .jpg or .pdf.

Please bring a printed copy of your answers to class on Tuesday. Do not post them in the blog.

Project 1 Final Versions

Here are the project 1 redesigns. We will critique these tomorrow in class. Please reply to this post with your 3 favorites. As you are looking at the designs, ask yourself what specifically what stands out (in a positive or negative way)? Which designs capture your attention? How do they capture your attention?, etc. So here they are
